A first ʿUmrah checklist for a family sending an elder
Documents, medication, maḥram arrangements, money and the two conversations to have before departure — written for the family, not the traveller.

Most preparation guides are addressed to the pilgrim. This one is addressed to the daughter, the son, the nephew who booked the trip and will spend two weeks refreshing a phone screen.
Four weeks out
- Passport valid six months beyond return, with two blank pages, photographed and stored in the family group.
- Vaccination certificates current — meningococcal ACWY is the one most often missed.
- A written medication list with generic names and doses, in English and Arabic, in the wallet and not only in the suitcase.
- A GP letter for any injectable medication or controlled substance.
- Confirmation of maḥram arrangements where required, and the maḥram's contact details shared with the group leader.
One week out
- Split money: some cash, a travel card, and a second card held by a travelling companion.
- Load the app, sign in, and complete the pilgrim record together — not on the day of travel at the airport.
- Add two emergency contacts in two different countries.
- Pack medication in hand luggage, in original packaging, doubled for the trip length.
- Agree a daily check-in time and hold to it, allowing for the three-hour difference and the prayer schedule.
The two conversations
The first is about limits. An elder who has waited forty years to stand before the Kaʿbah will not volunteer that the walk is too far. Decide together, in advance, what will be done by wheelchair and treat that as settled rather than as a failure to be renegotiated in the heat.
The second is about permission. Say explicitly that you would rather they complete the ʿUmrah slowly over three days than heroically in one. Give the permission before departure, because it is very difficult to accept it from a phone call while standing in the courtyard.
“The families who cope best are the ones who agreed the boundaries before anyone boarded a plane.”
